Liberalism......What A Concept!

What Bob Herbert said...

It would take volumes to adequately cover the enhancements to the quality of
American lives and the greatness of American society that have been wrought by
people whose politics were unabashedly liberal. It is a track record that
deserves to be celebrated, not ridiculed or scorned.

This is precisely the response to knuckle-dragging opportunists like Mitt Romney who said, with a straight face, at the Republican National Convention - "“We need change, all right...change from a liberal Washington to a conservative Washington.” Where the hell has he been for the last eight years?

Uh... haven't the Dems controlled Congress since 2006?

The Dems have only controlled Congress since January 2007 with a one-vote majority in the Senate (including the traitorous snake Lieberman). In the last year and eight months, Bush has vetoed 11 bills (after only wielding his veto pen once in 6 years of Republican control, for the Stem Cell Research Act) and the Republican minority has successfully filibustered much of the Democrats' legislative agenda. Thus, the importance of getting a Democrat into the Oval Office and strenghtening Democratic majorities in both houses.

Hmmm... A large part of your argument is that the Democrats did not employ effective filibuster tactics (which are legal) when the Republicans controlled Congress. Now that the Democrats control Congress, it sounds as if you're complaining that the Republicans are too good at filibustering.

Based on what you've said, yes, it does seem that the only way the Democrats can get any of their proposed legislation through is to control both houses of Congress and the Oval Office at the same time.

I don't see where I ever argued that the "Democrats did not employ effective filibuster tactics", so show where you're pulling that straw man from. I'm merely stating fact - the Republicans (who were once ready to exercise the nuclear option to remove the ability of the minority party to filibuster) have fallen in love with the filibuster and have exercised it with impunity.

The filibuster is indeed a legal and legitimate weapon for the minority party to wield, but the Republicans have used it like a bludgeon. But my argument goes beyond the filibuster...the Democrats have such a thin majority in both houses and they have not yet been successful in getting moderate Republicans to cross the aisle and vote for sensible legislation (either to close debate or override the President's veto). I believe that the results of this year's elections will convince those remaining moderates in the GOP that they better get on the same page or be out of work in the next election cycle.

So, why is it an excuse for the Democrats to be ineffective when their margin of majority is so thin when the Republicans seemed to do just fine when they controlled Congress? As you said, the Democrats seem to be having problems convincing moderate Republicans to cross the aisle. But, the Republicans didn't seem to have much problem convincing moderate Democrats to cross the aisle. Sounds like there are some weak fish among the moderate Democrats... lol

I won't disagree with you on that point, friend....which is why we need to elect better (not just more) Democrats!
